Established in 1908 as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg, the institution later became the State Teachers College at Harrisonburg in 1914 and Madison College in 1938. In 1977, it was renamed in honor of James Madison, the fourth President of the United States, and became James Madison University.
